Receiving The Holy Spirit

Bible Studies

“Our success in finishing this work depends on our submissiveness to the Word of God and the leading of the Holy Spirit. It depends on humbling ourselves before our Creator and denying self so that Jesus can control us and overcome our sin.” Ted Wilson (2010 General Conference, Atlanta Georgia)

1.       Luke 11:8 Desire the Spirit

“As the knowledge of the truth is received, let it be imparted to those who are in darkness, without God and without hope in the world. In such labor there is a variety of minds to deal with, and God will greatly bless His servants as they look to Him for wisdom. The Holy Spirit will come to all who are begging for the bread of life to give to their neighbors.” 6T 90

2.       Luke 11:9-13 Promise of the Spirit ten times repeated.

3.       Zech. 10:1 Pray for it.

“To the consecrated worker there is wonderful consolation in the knowledge that even Christ during His life on earth sought His Father daily for fresh supplies of needed grace; and from this communion with God He went forth to strengthen and bless others. Behold the Son of God bowed in prayer to His Father! Though He is the Son of God, He strengthens His faith by prayer, and by communion with heaven gathers to Himself power to resist evil and to minister to the needs of men. As the Elder Brother of our race He knows the necessities of those who, compassed with infirmity and living in a world of sin and temptation, still desire to serve Him. He knows that the messengers whom He sees fit to send are weak, erring men; but to all who give themselves wholly to His service He promises divine aid. His own example is an assurance that earnest, persevering supplication to God in faith--faith that leads to entire dependence upon God, and unreserved consecration to His work--will avail to bring to men the Holy Spirit's aid in the battle against sin.“ AA 56.1

THE LAW OF GOD

Bible Studies
I Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.
II Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them, for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate Me; and showing mercy unto thousands of them that love Me, and keep My commandments.
III Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh His name in vain.
IV Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work; but the Seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God. In it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maid. servant nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the Seventh day: Wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.
V Honor thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
VI Thou shalt not kill.
VII Thou shalt not commit adultery.
VIII Thou shalt not steal.
IX Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
X Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house; thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbor's. Exo_20:3-17.

Christ - A Sinless Life

Bible Studies

What testimony is borne concerning Christ's life on earth?

"Who did no sin, neither was guile found in His mouth." 1Pe_2:22.

What is true of all other members of the human family?

"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." Rom_3:23.

With what question did Christ challenge His enemies?

"Which of you convinceth Me of sin?" Joh_8:46.

To what extent was Christ tempted?

"[He] was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin." Heb_4:15.

In His humanity, of what nature did Christ partake?

"Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, He also Himself likewise took part of the same; that through death He might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil." Heb_2:14.

How fully did Christ share our common humanity?

"Wherefore in all things it behooved Him to be made like unto His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people." Verse 17.

NOTE: In His humanity Christ partook of our sinful, fallen nature. If not, then He was not "made like unto His brethren," was not "in all points tempted like as we are," did not overcome as we have to overcome, and is not, therefore, the complete and perfect Saviour man needs and must have to be saved. The idea that Christ was born of an immaculate or sinless mother, inherited no tendencies to sin, and for this reason did not sin, removes Him from the realm of a fallen world, and from the very place where help is needed. On His human side, Christ inherited just what every child of Adam inherits,-- a sinful nature. On the divine side, from His very conception He was begotten and born of the Spirit. And all this was done to place mankind on vantage ground, and to demonstrate that in the same way every one who is "born of the Spirit" may gain like victories over sin in his own sinful flesh. Thus each one is to overcome as Christ overcame. Rev_3:21. Without this birth there can be no victory over temptation, and no salvation from sin. Joh_3:3-7.

End of Time - Prophecy

Bible Studies

What special promise did the Saviour make concerning His second coming?

"In My Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto Myself; that where I am there ye may be also." Joh_14:2, Joh_14:3.

What was to take place before the lord should return?

Upon hearing Christ say that the time would come when the temple at Jerusalem should be entirely destroyed, what did the disciples ask Him?"Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of Thy coming, and of the end of the world?" Mat_24:3.

"The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood,   before the great and the terrible day of the Lord come." Joe_2:31.

Upon hearing Christ say that the time would come when the temple at Jerusalem should be entirely destroyed, what did the disciples ask Him?

"Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of Thy coming, and of the end of the world?" Mat_24:3.

Did He intimate that the end was then close at hand?

"And Jesus answered and said unto them. Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in My name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. And ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars; see that ye be not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet." Mat_24:4-6.

After telling them there would be wars, famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in many places, what did He say these would be?

"All these are the beginning of sorrows." Mat_24:8.

NOTE: With all these things taking place as only the beginning of sorrows, the disciples certainly could not look for the Lord's coming in their generation.

To what extent is the gospel to be preached before the end?

"And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come." Mat_24:14.

NOTE: The word then as used here, is an adverb of time, meaning "at that time." The gospel to be so preached is not to convert the world; but is to be simply a "witness" unto all nations, that they may be condemned who do not obey it.

Patience

Bible Studies

For what were the precious promises of the word written?

"For whatsoever things were written aforetime, were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope." Rom_15:4.

What is the Father Himself called?

"The God of patience and consolation." Rom: 15:5.

Is patience enjoined upon us in Holy Writ?

"Be patient toward all men." 1Th_5:14. "In your patience possess ye your souls." Luk_21:19.

What contrast in drawn between the patient and the hasty spirit?

"He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding; but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly." Pro_14:29.

What worthy persons did James refer to, while dwelling on patience?

"Take, my brethren, the prophets... for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience." "Ye have heard of the patience of Job." Jam_5:10, Jam_5:11.

For what glorious event are the children of God bidden patiently to wait?

"And the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the patient waiting for Christ." 2Th_3:5. "Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Be ye also patient, stablish your hearts; for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh." Jam_5:7, Jam_5:8.
