The Highway to Health

Healthful Living

The consciousness of rightdoing is the best medicine for diseased bodies and minds. The special blessing of God resting upon the receiver is health and strength. One whose mind is quiet and satisfied in God is on the highway to health. To have the consciousness that the eye of the Lord is upon us, and that His ear is open to our prayers, is a satisfaction indeed. To know that we have a never-failing Friend to whom we can confide all the secrets of the soul is a happiness which words can never express. Those whose moral faculties are clouded by disease are not the ones to rightly represent the Christian life or the beauties of holiness. They are too often in the fire of fanaticism, or the water of cold indifference or stolid gloom.

Those who do not feel that it is a religious duty to discipline the mind to dwell upon cheerful subjects will usually be found at one of two extremes: they will be elated by a continual round of exciting amusements, indulging in frivolous conversation, laughing, and joking, or they will be depressed, having great trials and mental conflicts, which they think but few have ever experienced or can understand. . . . Appropriate labor, the healthy exercise of all their powers, would withdraw their thoughts from themselves. . . .

If they would train their minds to dwell upon themes which have nothing to do with self, they might yet be useful. . . .

Despondent feelings are frequently the result of too much leisure. The hands and mind should be occupied in useful labor, lightening the burdens of others; and those who are thus employed will benefit themselves also. . . .

The mind should be drawn away from self; it powers should be exercised in devising means to make others happier and better. "Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world" (Jam_1:27).

True religion ennobles the mind, refines the taste, sanctifies the judgment, and makes its possessor a partaker of the purity and holiness of heaven. It brings angels near, and separates us more and more from the spirit and influence of the world. It enters into all the acts and relations of life, and gives us the "spirit of . . . a sound mind," and the result is happiness and peace.--Signs of the Times, Oct. 23, 1884.

Christ - A Sinless Life

Bible Studies

What testimony is borne concerning Christ's life on earth?

"Who did no sin, neither was guile found in His mouth." 1Pe_2:22.

What is true of all other members of the human family?

"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." Rom_3:23.

With what question did Christ challenge His enemies?

"Which of you convinceth Me of sin?" Joh_8:46.

To what extent was Christ tempted?

"[He] was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin." Heb_4:15.

In His humanity, of what nature did Christ partake?

"Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, He also Himself likewise took part of the same; that through death He might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil." Heb_2:14.

How fully did Christ share our common humanity?

"Wherefore in all things it behooved Him to be made like unto His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people." Verse 17.

NOTE: In His humanity Christ partook of our sinful, fallen nature. If not, then He was not "made like unto His brethren," was not "in all points tempted like as we are," did not overcome as we have to overcome, and is not, therefore, the complete and perfect Saviour man needs and must have to be saved. The idea that Christ was born of an immaculate or sinless mother, inherited no tendencies to sin, and for this reason did not sin, removes Him from the realm of a fallen world, and from the very place where help is needed. On His human side, Christ inherited just what every child of Adam inherits,-- a sinful nature. On the divine side, from His very conception He was begotten and born of the Spirit. And all this was done to place mankind on vantage ground, and to demonstrate that in the same way every one who is "born of the Spirit" may gain like victories over sin in his own sinful flesh. Thus each one is to overcome as Christ overcame. Rev_3:21. Without this birth there can be no victory over temptation, and no salvation from sin. Joh_3:3-7.

End of Time - Prophecy

Bible Studies

What special promise did the Saviour make concerning His second coming?

"In My Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto Myself; that where I am there ye may be also." Joh_14:2, Joh_14:3.

What was to take place before the lord should return?

Upon hearing Christ say that the time would come when the temple at Jerusalem should be entirely destroyed, what did the disciples ask Him?"Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of Thy coming, and of the end of the world?" Mat_24:3.

"The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood,   before the great and the terrible day of the Lord come." Joe_2:31.

Upon hearing Christ say that the time would come when the temple at Jerusalem should be entirely destroyed, what did the disciples ask Him?

"Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of Thy coming, and of the end of the world?" Mat_24:3.

Did He intimate that the end was then close at hand?

"And Jesus answered and said unto them. Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in My name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. And ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars; see that ye be not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet." Mat_24:4-6.

After telling them there would be wars, famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in many places, what did He say these would be?

"All these are the beginning of sorrows." Mat_24:8.

NOTE: With all these things taking place as only the beginning of sorrows, the disciples certainly could not look for the Lord's coming in their generation.

To what extent is the gospel to be preached before the end?

"And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come." Mat_24:14.

NOTE: The word then as used here, is an adverb of time, meaning "at that time." The gospel to be so preached is not to convert the world; but is to be simply a "witness" unto all nations, that they may be condemned who do not obey it.

Good Health

Healthful Living

What important wish (prayer, margin) is expressed by the apostle concerning Gaius?

"Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth." 3Jo_1:2.

Why is it necessary to preserve the body in health?

"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service." Rom_12:1.

When one is truly sanctified, how much of him will be affected?

"And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ." 1Th_5:23.

How did the apostle guard himself?

"But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway." 1Co_9:27.

"What! know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?" 1Co_6:19.

Is it expedient to eat everything that it is lawful to eat?

"All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not." 1Co_10:23.

Is God's glory to be considered even in one's eating?

"Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God." 1Co_10:31.
