"And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, the restorer of paths to dwell in." Isaiah 58:12

Christ’s Relation To The Law

To show that Christ and the law are inseparable is the purpose of this lesson. Jesus was the principles of the law manifested in the flesh.

Similarity Of Christ And The Law

  1. Observe that the law is an expression of the character of its Author.
    1. God is righteous. Ps 145:17. All His commandments are righteous. Ps. 119:172

    1. God is love. 1 John 4:8. His law is based on love. Matt. 22:36-40

    1. God is holy. Lev. 11:44. His law is holy. Rom. 7:12

    1. He is a God of truth. Ps. 31:5. His law is truth. Mal. 2:6

    1. God is a spirit. John 4:24. His law is spiritual. Rom 7:14

    1. God is perfect. Matt. 5:48. His law is perfect. Ps. 19:7

“God requires perfection of His children. His law is a transcript of His own character, and it is the standard of all character. This infinite standard is presented to all that there may be no mistake in regard to the kind of people whom God will have to compose His kingdom. The life of Christ on earth was a perfect expression of God's law, and when those who claim to be children of God become Christlike in character, they will be obedient to God's commandments. Then the Lord can trust them to be of the number who shall compose the family of heaven. Clothed in the glorious apparel of Christ's righteousness, they have a place at the King's feast. They have a right to join the blood-washed throng.” COL 315

  1. Since God’s law is an expression of His character, how enduring is it? Ps. 90:2 with Ps. 111:7, 8.

Jesus’ Relation To The Law

  1. What did the prophet say Jesus would do with the law? Isa. 42:19-21

  1. Notice how Jesus did this. Matt. 5:21-48

  1. For what purpose did He come to earth? Matt. 5:17; Rom. 8:3, 4.

If, as some contend, the Word “fulfill” means “to do away with,” then all righteousness was abolished at the baptism of Christ. Matt. 3:15 The word fulfill means to fill full. Jesus, by living up to all the requirements of the law filled it full. There was nothing lacking; He did all that the law required.

  1. What was His relation to the law of God? John 15:10

  1. How long did He say the law would be in force? Matt. 5:18, 19

Principal texts: Rom. 7:12; Ps. 19:7; Ps. 111:7, 8; Matt. 5:17; John 15:10.
